Optimal study conditions
The public education sector in Namibia is facing serious challenges in the provision of student accommodation. Currently many students are housed in sub-optimal structures, ranging from overcrowded rooms to garages and even make-shift structures without water and electricity. They travel to Uni by taxi or by foot, which is not always safe, especially not when it is dark.
It is imperative that students enrolled at all tertiary education institutions get a fair chance to excel and obtain a degree. Students need to be able to focus on their studies and not be distracted by sub-optimal living conditions, too much noise, no light, and lack of basic facilities.
As a nation, we would want our youngsters to perform well at University. Armed with a degree they will help drive the economy to higher performance and diversification. Tertiary education is expensive - for parents, caretakers, providers of grants and the Government of Namibia, which through the Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund sets aside a considerable portion of the budget. All these resources must make an impact on Namibia's future.
Each floor houses 12 students who share a sizable kitchen with balcony, and a bathroom with 3 toilets, 3 showers, and 3 washing basins. A floor will either be for female or male students.
OSV management and Student Leads will organise special events to bring the Village to life.
Students will have access to the court yard gym equipment while the shaded areas in the court yard may be used for study groups or socialising.
There is a kiosk, business centre and other basic services offered at the Village, and so a coin-operated laundry.
Students can cook, eat and chill in the spacious kitchen area. There is a balcony with 4 beanbags for more private chill time or simply some alone time.
OSV offers a safe and study-friendly environment. Each room is equipped with twin-sized loft beds, individual study space, and a lockable cupboard.
Student safely is a central feature of OSV. Not only will all fire and personal safety standards be met, access control will be key. In addition, on-campus staff and Student Leads will work together towards early intervention for students who are not in a good space due to study or other stress. OSV will offer the safety net of a real community.
